2nd ER Visit - 1/22/15

I took Logan into the doctors on Wednesday (1/21/15) because he was wheezing, coughing, super congested, had a 102 fever last night, and just hadn't been getting better so I thought I would check out what's going on. He tested positive for RSV....I had a slight suspicion he had RSV but just wanted to be sure. I thought he had an ear infection too because he kept on rubbing his right ear, but they said it was just wax build up. His pediatrician had a busy schedule so we got set up with a Nurse Practitioner. They checked his breathing and it was really high so we did an Albuterol treatment in the doctors office (nebulizer) and they sent us home saying we should do the nebulizer every 4 hours for the next few days. They sent us home and told us if he has a decrease in appetite or his breathing is just really fast to take him into the ER.

Later that night I had Logan sleep in his bouncer in our room because I knew he was having a hard time breathing. I really couldn't sleep well because he was breathing so fast and he still had pretty bad wheezing. I debated taking him into the ER several times that night but waited it out for a couple of hours. Logan woke up at 2:30 am for a feeding. After I did the nebulizer treatment he threw up ALL his food. Not just a little bit of food, but his whole stomach full of food. It was all over me and all over the floor. After this happened I knew I needed to take him into the ER because he wasn't getting any fluids down and if he was it was just a little bit. His breathing was also really fast which raised a concern.

We left the house at 3:00 am and took him in. They did all the vitals on him (heart beat, oxygen, etc.). His  breathing was really fast, as we knew, and they also found a ear infection in his right ear. I knew it!!! They prescribed him some Amoxicillin for the ear infection. His congestion was really bad so they took this tube vacuum thing and suctioned out his nose with saline solution drops. He didn't really like that part, but it helped him to suction everything out. He was really hungry so we fed him and he seemed to be getting food down ok since he nose was now suctioned out. After feeding him we waited around for a little bit to see if he was ok enough to take home. After assessing his overall condition we decided it would be best to go home and get some rest. Steve was planning on staying home 1/2 day and getting some rest, but decided to go in at 8....what a trooper.

Logan's pediatrician wanted him to come in on Friday for a follow-up ER visit and to check up on his RSV. He seemed to be doing a lot better than he was doing on Wednesday, but was still pretty bad. His weight was down 8 oz from Wednesday and he still had some wheezing. He was pretty dehydrated so we had to have him drink some pedialyte while at the doctors....it was miserable! Logan wouldn't drink anything and we basically had to force him to drink something. It took us 3 hours at the office to get him to drink 4 oz!!! I was really kind of scared to go home because I knew he probably wouldn't drink anything, but we went home anyway.

The next couple of days were rough for Logan. The nebulizer was helping his breathing, but he was still pretty congested and had a hard time during feedings. I noticed he really wasn't drinking much so I took him in again on Monday...see this post for an update on the rest.
